Toddlers are full of energy, joy, and life, Riley is no different.

She, at the age of three carries with her another story.  She has ALL, this is Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.  That is quite the mouth full.  She was in remission for a while then a knot was found on her tummy and her parents and doctors discovered that the Leukemia had returned.

Just a couple of weeks ago, right before she was to receive a transplant to save her life, the doctors found leukemia in her eye.  Just this past Thursday, Riley began her radiation treatments focused on her brain.  She will three treatments with her brain as the focus.  Then she will have three days of total body radiation before she can prepare for her transplant.

When Riley arrived at our session location with her mom and baby brother, she greeted me with the sweetest smile.  I had spoken with her mom prior and asked her about some of Riley’s favorite things.  Princesses and super heroes.   The only super hero princess that came to my mind was Wonder women.   After greeting this little princess I asked her who her favorite super hero was…. Her reply… “the Women.”  My response to her was, ” Do you mean Wonder Women?”   “Yes, her.”  “I like her.”  And rightly so, they have so much in common.  Their strength, hope for all things good and a desire to change the world.  Riley is only three, but look into her eyes and you will see a child who will one change lives with her story and bring hope to those who need it most.

This experience was both humbling and met with gratitude.  Riley and her mom seemed to be surround in peace.  Their world was busy with doctors appointments, schedules and more of both.  Riley’s mom is a women of strength.  She has two babes under the age of 4.  One is on the verge of walking and the other is about to receive a bone marrow transplant.  While Riley was dancing and running around our location I did my best to capture her being every bit of Riley as I could.

Mean while, I was able to chat with her mom about this crazy journey they are on.  Her mom, Abby, is a hair stylist.  Notice to purple streaks in Riley’s hair… how fun is that.  She did her very best to explain to me what the next several months into the next year held for them as a family of 4 embarking on this journey.  They are not alone they have family, friends, co workers, strangers who hear their story and come alongside them to support and encourage them.

With the help of a little dance music from one of her favorite movies and my silly assistant, my son, we were able to play with Riley and enjoy time with the amazing little girl, her mom and baby brother.

I walked away from this session feeling thankful to have met such strong and courageous women.  The gift that this family is and will be to so many others is priceless.  Their story is not finished… They are starting a new chapter. You can read more about Riley’s journey by visiting here.

Riley beautiful girl we are praying for you and for a quick and full recovery.
